Perspective

As a visual arts middle grades teacher I have several concept goals I wish to teach:

6th grade concept: Students will understand the concept of one point perspective. Students will create perspective in works using overlapping, size, value and placement.  Vocabulary – perspective, vanishing point, orthogonals, one point linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, depth, foreground, middle ground and background. Students will understand that art during the middle ages was flat and that perspective was invented in the Renaissance in Florence, Italy by Brunelleschi. They will also understand that art was created by commission.

7th grade students will apply one point perspective and create perspective in works using overlapping, size, value and placement. Vocabulary – landscape, cityscape, seascape, perspective, vanishing point, one point linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, depth, foreground, middle ground and background.

8th grade students will understand the concept of one and two point perspective. Vocabulary -  perspective, vanishing point, one point linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, picture plane, depth, foreground, middle ground and background.

The Art Institute of Chicago has a great selfguide. The students can compare Botticini’s Adoration of the Magi, 1495 with the Ayala Altarpiece, 1396
