Color Theory
One of my goals for painting is to introduce color theory. I start out with three handouts that need to be painted in. The purpose of these graphic organizers is to introduce vocabulary in a hands-on fashion. Depending on the grade level of the students, I follow this assignment with a color theory project. There is a fun online color theory quiz from about.com

Painting Techniques
There are a number of painting techniques I teach my students: wet on wet, wash, wet on dry, dry on dry, sgrafetto, drag, stipple, tonal modeling and drybrush to name a few. A great website that shows how to do some of these watercolor/ painting techniques can be found at the Incredible Art Department website.
Let’s not forget that we can paint by stamping gadgets or rolling patterned brayers. We can use crayons that repel water. In addition we can blot our paper with paper towels to make interesting textures or we can let plastic wrap sit on our painting over night.
I found a great video of Australian students drawing waterlillies and bridges a la Monet on Teacher Tube. But let me tell you there are some awful videos out there. I saw some from expert village on abstract painting techniques and they were too short and horrid.
