Fix to Certiport Pearson OnVue USB Storage Device Test Failure

Using the OnVue software, I was having the hardest time passing the software/hardware readiness test. I kept failing because I either had a USB Mass Storage Device or a USB Storage Device. On reddit several people mentioned having the same error and one person said they fixed it by renaming their devices. Well today I was determined to do that and see if I could pass the test.

I found a helpful video How to Rename Hardware in Device Manager for Windows 11/10

First step is to open Device Manager and expand the USB listings.

Next right click on the device you want to rename. I renamed 3 USB storage devices and 1 USB mass storage device. So I would right mouse click on the USB Storage Device and click Properties. Then go to Details –> Driver Key and copy the driver key.

Then I would hit Windows Key and R to open the run window then I typed regedit. This would open the registry editor.

Once in registry you would go to Computer\H_KeyLocal_Machine\System\ControlSet001\Enum\ then right click and FIND then paste your clipboard driver key number.

Then you would right-click NEW –> String Value. Once it pops up right click and hit MODIFY. Then type FriendlyName and in the VALUE field select the title of what you want to call the USB Storage Device. Mine were Generic Microsoft Parent Drivers so that is what I named them. I didn’t add spaces for the title.

Once I renamed all 4 of my USB storage devices I passed the test. It should be noted, I even disabled a USB storage device, but that wasn’t good enough. I ended up having to rename it in order to pass the Pearson OnVue software/hardware test.

When I called support yesterday, they told me that they didn’t do technical support and I would have to figure it out on my own. If it wasn’t for the reddit community, I would have ended up driving over one day to a testing center 2 states away.
